Photo Blog: North Wales 2011 Part 2 – Railways

Part two: Railway Journeys.

One of the main attractions in North Wales is the large number of preserved steam railways, the majority of which are Narrow Gauge. I didn’t go to that many, but I was able to travel the entire length of the newly completed Welsh Highland Railway, which winds it’s way through the highlands from Porthmadoc to Caernarfon. It even travels through the Streets of Porthmadoc to link to the Station there, which also services the FFestiniog Railway. I certainly don’t think there’s a better way to view the scenery of North Wales.

I also visited the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, which was the end point to the original Welsh Highland and was supposed to be the end of the restored one until they decided to take it to end at the Ffestiniog Railway station instead. There’s a museum in the engine shed which houses the chassis of Russell, the only surviving engine from the original Welsh Highland, which is currently being restored to operational status.

Some photos were taken from a moving train so I’ve fixed a few in Photoshop.
